The Best Push Lawn Mower For the Environment?

!±8± The Best Push Lawn Mower For the Environment?

When it comes to push mowers, you have a few basic options. First there is the standard gas push mower, then there are self-propelled mowers, various kinds of electrical mowers (including ones with and without cords), and finally the classic, the reel mower. You may not recognize the name, but chances are you would know one when you saw it. The reel mower may be the mower of your grandfather's generation, but it's making a comeback!

Simply put, push mowers are pretty much an environmentalist dream mower. There is no motor so there is no noise or emissions to worry about. Push mowers don't have a battery to discard and the only maintenance is sharpening the blades.

However, these classic mowers have had a bit of a facelift since your grandfather bought his first one fifty years ago. Many people claim that new models are much easier to operate than the old ones.

But aside from ease of use, they now come with a few accessories. For instance, if you don't want to pick up grass clippings after every time you mow, you can buy an attached lawn mower bag or an open grass catcher. Some models also offer adjustable blade heights to accommodate different kinds of grass.

If weight is an issue, reel machines are definitely the most lightweight option you'll find in a mower. It could simply be that one fact that makes this the best push lawn mower for you. Some, such as the Brill reel mower, can weigh as little as fifteen pounds! That's just a fraction of what most standard mowers weigh.

It may even be up for debate as to which one reel mowers are better for; your grass or your back. Many people believe that the way reel mowers cut grass is actually better for it than using a "regular" gas push mower.

Buggy Construction Tips Using Dune Buggy Plans

!±8± Buggy Construction Tips Using Dune Buggy Plans

So you want to tear up the dunes with your own dune buggy but you're not sure whether to buy a complete turn key buggy or use some dune buggy plans to build your own? Well firstly there are a number of issues you need to address before you decide which route to take.

The main factor that people consider when deciding to buy/build a dune buggy is the cost of the project, how much is it going to cost me if i decide to buy one Vs. build one myself? Now i can't give you an accurate figure for each as it will depend on where you live, how much shipping will cost and how much materials cost in your area if you decide to build one. It will also depend on how skilled you are with metal fabrication, welding etc. If you will have to pay for a shop to fabricate the parts you need you will obviously be paying more in the end compared to someone who can do it all themselves in their own garage/workshop.

But most of the time its cheaper (and more fun!) to build a buggy yourself. For most people this is easily achievable in their own garage or workshop as long as you have some basic tools and machinery or you have access to some, you know things like a welder, tube bender, grinder, drill press, you get the picture. I should mention that you can hire these things too if you want to or just take the specialized tasks to your local engineering shop. Usually when you tell the guys what its for they get pretty interested and will want to know more about your project and up giving you a good price!

I highly recommend NOT designing your own dune buggy from scratch unless you know what you are doing and have experience in design. Be warned that if you do it will usually end in disaster and a half finished bundle of steel sitting in your garage. That said the most important factor in dune buggy construction is which plans to use for construction. If you get this wrong or use the cheapest or plans you can find you will regret it in the end as they rarely turn out how you first imagined. Lets face it you are about to invest quite a bit of money and time into building a dune buggy so make sure you choose quality plans from the start.

Most good quality, proven plans will set you back around 0-0 and will give you good solid information and a step by step procedure to building your buggy. You can get plans for cheaper but usually these are quite basic and you won't get the detail you need to build the buggy properly.

Also make sure the company you are buying the plans from has some kind of support you can call on in case you get stuck and need some advice, this could be as simple as a user form that has members that have constructed their own buggies and are willing to give you advice for free. This is invaluable when building your buggy.

For me personally, building my own dune buggy is one of the most fun and most rewarding projects I have done. From cutting the first piece of steel to firing up the engine for the first time is a fantastic feeling and i definitely recommend to those of you who are considering it.

My Experiences With Lawn Tractor Attachments

!±8± My Experiences With Lawn Tractor Attachments

When I was growing up my family had an old Cub Cadet Garden Tractor that we used mostly for mowing the large lawn at our place and my grand parents. This was a great little tractor, and as I have gotten older I have really come to appreciate the plethora of garden tractor attachments that are available for this little garden tractor.

A few years ago I purchased an old 1974 Case 444 garden tractor a have since rebuilt the engine and much of the machine. Like the Cub Cadet garden tractor, the Case 444 has many yard tractor attachments available for it. Mine came with an under belly mower deck and a hydraulic rear tiller.

This is just the start of the yard tractor attachments that a person can get though. There are snow blowers, tillage tools, log splitters, generators and really you name it that can either be bought or built for this and other lawn tractors.

It is great fun to look around on the internet to see the creativity of people as they are building yard tractor attachments for these and other lawn tractors.

I found a forum over at yahoo that is full of guys modified and building attachments for the Case 444. There are also forums for the Cub cadet and the Wheel Horse lawn tractors as well as many others I am sure.

There are also many plans available for building attachments for you lawn tractor. One set of plans that looks like a lot of fun to build are a loader and mini backhoe for a yard tractor. While I think the loader could have many practical uses, I rather doubt that a backhoe could be of enough use to justify the work or expense to build. Never-the-less I think it would be great fun to build and play with.
